A Summary of Your Rights Under the FCRA

The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), 15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq., promotes the accuracy, fairness, and privacy of information in the files of consumer reporting agencies. The following is a plain-English summary of your rights when disputing information through Syntrove DISPUTE.

  1. Right to a reinvestigation (§ 611)

You have the right to dispute the completeness or accuracy of any information in your consumer file. We must reinvestigate the disputed item free of charge and complete the reinvestigation within 30 days.

  2. 45-day extension

If you provide additional relevant information during the initial 30-day period, the reinvestigation window may be extended by up to 15 days (45 days total). We will notify you if an extension is applied to your case.

  3. Furnisher notification

Within 5 business days of receiving your dispute, we will notify the furnisher (the entity that supplied the disputed information) so they can conduct their own investigation and report back with their findings.

  4. Notice of outcome

You will receive written notice of the results of the reinvestigation no later than 5 business days after it is completed, including whether the disputed information was verified, updated, or deleted.

  5. If the item is verified as accurate

You may add a statement of up to 100 words describing the nature of your dispute to your consumer file. This statement will be included with any future reports containing the disputed item.

  6. Source and method of verification

You may request the business name, address, and (where available) telephone number of any furnisher contacted during the reinvestigation, along with a description of the procedure used to verify the information.

  7. Free corrected report

If information is corrected or deleted, you are entitled to a free copy of your revised consumer file. You may also request that notice of the correction be sent to anyone who received the report in the last two years for employment purposes, or six months for any purpose.

  8. Escalation to regulators (§ 611(f))

If you disagree with the outcome of the reinvestigation, you may file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, your state attorney general, or the Federal Trade Commission. You may also bring a private civil action.
