File a consumer report dispute

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA § 611, 15 U.S.C. § 1681i(a)(1)(A)), you have the right to dispute information on your consumer report that is incomplete or inaccurate. We will complete our reinvestigation within 30 days of receiving your dispute. If you provide additional relevant information during that period, the deadline may be extended by up to 15 days. You will be notified in writing of the outcome — including any corrections, deletions, or a determination that the disputed information was verified as accurate.

Under 15 U.S.C. § 1681i(a)(1)(A), a reinvestigation is available only for information you believe is incomplete or inaccurate. If the information in your report is accurate and complete, we cannot open a reinvestigation, even if you disagree with how it reflects on you. Under 15 U.S.C. § 1681i(a)(3), we may also decline to reinvestigate a dispute we reasonably determine to be frivolous or irrelevant — including a repeat dispute of an item already verified as accurate, submitted without new relevant information. If an item is verified as accurate, you may instead add a statement of up to 100 words to your file describing the nature of your dispute.

Before you submit — your rights at a glance

  • Right to a reinvestigation (§ 611). You have the right to dispute the completeness or accuracy of any information in your consumer file. We must reinvestigate the disputed item free of charge and complete the reinvestigation within 30 days.
  • 45-day extension. If you provide additional relevant information during the initial 30-day period, the reinvestigation window may be extended by up to 15 days (45 days total). We will notify you if an extension is applied to your case.
  • Furnisher notification. Within 5 business days of receiving your dispute, we will notify the furnisher (the entity that supplied the disputed information) so they can conduct their own investigation and report back with their findings.
  • Notice of outcome. You will receive written notice of the results of the reinvestigation no later than 5 business days after it is completed, including whether the disputed information was verified, updated, or deleted.
  • If the item is verified as accurate. You may add a statement of up to 100 words describing the nature of your dispute to your consumer file. This statement will be included with any future reports containing the disputed item.
  • Source and method of verification. You may request the business name, address, and (where available) telephone number of any furnisher contacted during the reinvestigation, along with a description of the procedure used to verify the information.
